A shocking brawl outside a busy western Sydney train station which resulted in a man being flown to hospital with a stab wound to the back is alleged by police to have begun as an organised fight between a group of school-aged children.

Emergency services were called to Beames Ave, Mt Druitt shortly after the end of the school day at 3pm on Tuesday following reports a group of men were fighting outside Mt Druitt train station.

A 20-year-old man suffering a 3cm stab wound to his back was treated at the scene by paramedics, before being flown to Westmead Hospital via a CareFlight helicopter with non-life threatening injuries.

A 17-year-old youth was also treated for a cut to the head, with another two youths suffering injuries to their lip and ear.

Mt Druitt police crime manager detective inspector Paul Tickner said investigators allege the fight began when two shirtless youths began brawling with one another under the supervision of their “older brothers”.

“When one of them is thrown to the ground, some other people have moved in,” Insp Tickner said.

“One kid has wound up and (allegedly) hit someone from behind with a massive dog shot – a king hit. That (alleged hit) just really set everyone off. (Police will allege they then) began punching each other and doing all sorts of stuff.

“It just spiralled out of control.”

Insp. Tickner said officers believed from the limited information provided by those involved, the brawl was not random and police will allege it was an organised fight between two youths who “came across each other and hated each other”. Currently, the brawl is not believed to linked to postcode gangs.

Officers attached to the police youth command are in the process of reaching out to schools in the area to identify those involved.

Insp. Tickner said many the youths allegedly involved were wearing school uniforms at the time.

Following the incident, five people have been charged with affray.

Three youths were granted conditional bail to appear before Children’s Court on April 10.

A further two adults also received conditional bail to appear at Mt Druitt Local Court on April 14.

The 20-year-old man remains in hospital following the alleged stabbing.

NSW Ambulance inspector William Edwards said paramedics on the scene had been concerned about possible internal injuries, as they didn’t know how deep the knife went.
