Almost 1000 apartments could be built in a growing western Sydney suburb with new employment and education opportunities under a proposal submitted to one of the region’s biggest councils.

The scoping report, conducted by Think Planners Pty Ltd on behalf of the developer, Universal Property Group, outlines a plan to build a mixed housing complex at 6-10 Mount St, Mt Druitt.

The site currently has three single-storey retail buildings, which the plan states will need to be demolished in order to build two mixed housing development complexes.

On the ground floor of these buildings, the plan is to have room for retail/commercial, six levels of basement carparking and a total of 926 apartments.

Of those 926 apartments, 180 are set to be used as affordable housing for a minimum of 15 years.

The plans state out of the 926 apartments, 14 will be studios, 46 will have only one bedroom, 300 will have two bedrooms and 478 will be three bedroom apartments.

If the development goes ahead, it is estimated to take under four years for demolition and construction.

The report points out Mt Druitt has been identified as a suburb where there are growing opportunities for “employment, education and high density residential”, particularly due to the presence of the Mt Druitt Hospital.

Currently, the Blacktown Local Council are anticipating the local government area population to increase from 348,050 to 612,150 by 2041, and will need an additional 111,000 residences to keep up with this projected growth.

An Environmental Impact Statement report is still being prepared before the project can go on exhibition for public feedback.
