A major Mount Druitt sports stadium is set to undergo a multimillion-dollar upgrade which will double its current capacity.

The Kevin Betts Stadium, on Ralph Place, is the home of the City of Blacktown Basketball Association and has been a major community precinct servicing greater western Sydney.

The stadium, which hosts basketball and wheelchair sports, will expand from two basketball courts to four as it undergoes a massive makeover.

The two new courts will be on either side of the existing building and will be accompanied by more parking, a new driveway, more amenities and a new lobby connection.

A Blacktown Council spokesman said the project budget is $10.3m, with a $5m grant from the NSW Government’s Greater Sydney Sports Facility Fund. Council will fund the remainder of the cost.

“The project will expand capacity and improve opportunities for those under-represented in participation, such as people with a disability and women and girls,” the spokesman said.

“The expansion of Kevin Betts Stadium is part of Blacktown City Council’s ongoing campaign to encourage our community to be active and improve participation.

“The project is also part of the larger vision to transform Mount Druitt town centre.”

Blacktown City Mayor Brad Bunting said the demand to play at the stadium showed how dedicated the Blacktown community was to sport.

“We want to reward that enthusiasm to be active and ensure everyone who wants to play can do so,” he said.

The project is expected to be completed by mid-2025.
