Police have launched a manhunt after a man was stabbed in the backyard of a Lethbridge Park house last night.
The 23-year-old, who is yet to be formally identified, was stabbed in the chest at the Magellan Ave home at about 11.45pm on Sunday.
Mt Druitt Police Detective Chief Inspector Paul Tickner said the man had recently launched a lawn mowing business and was visiting an associate and two other men at the house to return a lawnmower.
The victim was in the backyard when the attack occurred and yelled out to the occupants inside for help.
By the time the men had reached the backyard, the attacker had fled.
Paramedics treated the man at the scene for a collapsed lung, but his condition quickly deteriorated and he died while being transported to a Careflight helicopter nearby.
Chief Inspector Paul Tickner said detectives were yet to single out any suspects.
“At this stage we don’t have any suspects and we don’t have any motives in regards to the circumstances surrounding this stabbing,” he said.
“We haven’t formally identified him at this stage. We believe we have a name. He sounds a bit transient in regards to where he lived, with no fixed address.”
He said the stabbing did not appear to be a “frenzied attack”. The weapon has not yet been located.
The victim is understood to have links to south-western Sydney and was not known to police.
Chief Inspector Tickner said the investigation was complex.
“It’s always complex when there are no eye witnesses to an offence like this,” he said.
“It makes it difficult. We have to put together a number of versions to paint a picture of what occurred.”
A crime scene remains in place at the scene and a neighbouring house where the victim’s car was parked.
Magellan Ave is still closed but is expected to reopen tonight.
