A man who was charged after a police pursuit from the inner west to Rooty Hill – which was sparked after he was allegedly shoplifting $35 cigarettes at a 7-Eleven – has been ordered by a magistrate to be assessed at a mental health facility.

Nastrin Sullaphen’s case was heard at Mt Druitt Court on Tuesday after the 29 year old fled the Drummoyne convenience shop in an allegedly stolen Subaru WRX sedan on Victoria Rd the previous day about 1pm.

Shortly after, Raptor Highway Patrol officers spotted the blue car with no numberplates on Lyons Rd where it allegedly failed to stop once police saw it.

The 29-year-old driver allegedly travelled through local streets before cops terminated the pursuit at Five Dock because of dangerous driving.

A short time later, police again saw the car on Parramatta Rd, Five Dock.

Attempts to stop the Subaru were unsuccessful and the car was monitored by PolAir travelling to Homebush West and onto the M4 and M7.

When the vehicle slowed because of heavy traffic at Rooty Hill, police arrested the driver, who was taken to Mt Druitt police station and charged with six offences: shoplifting,

police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously, drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous, drive conveyance taken without consent of owner, use unregistrable vehicle not display authorised number plates, and drive motor vehicle during disqualification period.

The Parklea man was refused bail to appear at Mt Druitt Court where Magistrate Bree Chisholm ordered a section 19 mental health assessment.

Under the act, if the defendant is found not to be mentally ill, they can be brought back to court before a magistrate.

Ms Chisholm dispensed him bail and no pleas were entered.
