A relationship breakdown fuelled by alcohol abuse and constant arguments led a western Sydney woman to “accidentally” fatally stab her partner with a steak knife in the middle of the street, it can be revealed.
Lisa Srsa, 52, pleaded guilty to manslaughter in Penrith Local Court on Friday, after a murder charge was dropped over the stabbing death of her partner Glenn Sidney Pedgrift in Blacktown in October 2018.
Srsa will face sentencing in the Supreme Court in November after admitting to killing her partner by accident when she threw a knife at the 47-year-old and hit him in the chest following an argument at their Meroo St home on October 10.
The domestic feuding that sparked the tragic death can be revealed for the first time, with court documents detailing the chaotic events in the hours leading up to Mr Pedgrift’s death.
Court documents showed the pair, who had been in a relationship for five years, and lived with Srsa’s ex-partner and adult children, both struggled with alcohol and fought over Srsa’s suspected infidelity.
On the morning of the stabbing, Mr Pedgrift had been drinking at the Sportsman’s Hotel in Blacktown, where the couple were regulars, and graffitied offensive remarks about Srsa all over the toilet cubicles and mirrors.
The graffiti labelled Srsa as a “slut” and a “dog” and included her mobile phone number, directing men to call her for “a good time”.
After Srsa was told about the graffiti and attended the hotel herself, she reportedly told staff she “felt sick” and had a heated argument with Mr Pedgrift when she returned home.
The argument became so heated, Srsa’s son was forced to intervene and urged Mr Pedgrift to leave the home to allow the couple to cool off.
As Mr Pedgrift walked down the street, Srsa, grabbed a 10cm steak knife from the kitchen sink and followed her partner several doors down before she threw the knife at him.
The knife stabbed him in the left chest, and after he called for help from local tradesmen. At this point, Srsa was overheard yelling to her partner, “Get back here you f***ing b******”.
Mr Pedgrift collapsed on the front lawn of the property and died at the scene.
In a state of panic, Srsa walked back home, and frantically told her son, “I stabbed him, I stabbed him”, before calling triple-0.
A recording of the phone call reveals Srsa told the emergency crews Mr Pedgrift had been stabbed, but she did not admit to being his attacker.
Srsa was arrested shortly after at her home, where she was found drunk and with her hands covered in blood.
She reportedly told police she had been arguing with Mr Pedgrift for weeks and was frustrated when he had withdrawn money from her account to “buy pot” that morning.
While in custody, Srsa made phone calls to family where she maintained the death was an accident.
“I’m not a f***ing murderer,” she said in one call.
A psychiatrist’s report revealed Srsa was “impaired by abnormality of the mind” at the time of the stabbing and suffered from a string of mental illnesses including PTSD, agoraphobia and substance abuse disorder.
The report further revealed Srsa had suffered “chronic brain damage” due to alcohol abuse and had not been in a state to exercise “reasonable judgment and control of her actions” when the death took place.
