An inmate at Silverwater prison has been sentenced for throwing a cup of water at a corrections officer after he was told to get off the phone.
Kings Langley man Jarryd Barber, remanded in custody for allegedly shooting a man in the foot in western Sydney in August, pleaded guilty at Blacktown Local Court to assaulting a corrections officer last month.
The court heard Barber, aged 27, tried to make a call from a wall phone on September 18 when he was told to hang up by a corrections officer. In response, the inmate threw a full cup of water over the officer.
Barber’s lawyer told the court he had been punished while in prison, including the removal of a TV set from his cell and three month segregation.
Magistrate Brian van Zuylen said the Kings Langley man had “an enormous 101 page record” and noted he had previously served a 12 month jail sentence for assaulting a police officer.
“Given his long history of violence and criminality there is no other option than full time imprisonment,” he said.
“It is important that correctional service staff do not suffer assault of any kind when they are simply doing their job.”
Barber was sentenced to three months jail, backdated to September 18.
The 27-year-old also entered pleas of not guilty to an unrelated incident in which he was charged with aggravated break and enter, enter enclosed land without lawful excuse and steal motor vehicle. The matter was listed for hearing at Sutherland Local Court next year.
A number of unrelated gun-related charges, including fire firearm in a manner likely to injure persons or property and reckless wounding in August, were also mentioned in court. No pleas have been entered and the matter will return to Blacktown Local Court in December.

An alleged gunman accused of shooting a man in the foot at western Sydney has allegedly spat at two police officers on his arrest.
Jarryd Barber, 27, of Kings Langley, was arrested and charged following a police investigation into an incident which saw a 27-year-old man nursing a gunshot wound to his right foot at Lalor Park on Saturday night.
Emergency services rushed to the scene about 11pm on Saturday and transported the man to Westmead Hospital for surgery.
Officers from the Blacktown Police Area Command spoke with a man and woman at the scene, who said a third man fled from the area on foot.
A crime scene was established and police set out to look for the third man with the assistance from the Dog Unit and Polair but he was not found.
Investigations led police to a unit on Botany Blvd, Kings Langley about 6.20pm on Monday, where they arrested Barber. Police allege that during the arrest the 27-year-old spat and assaulted two police officers.
He was later charged with eight offences, including reckless wounding and fire firearm in a manner likely to injure.
At Blacktown Local Court on Tuesday, Barber’s lawyer applied for a two week adjournment which was granted by Magistrate Brian van Zuylen.
The matter will return to court on August 17.
