A man who claims he had no idea of a total fire ban across the state has been fined after firing up his barbecue to cook sausages and eggs yesterday.

Daniel Alan Crawley, 46, of Lalor Park, was sentenced in Blacktown Local Court on Tuesday after pleading guilty to one count of failing to comply with a total fire ban order. He was also arrested for breaching bail.

Firefighters were alerted to the fire after a concerned neighbour called emergency services at 5am yesterday.

Fire and Rescue NSW arrived at the Danny Rd property and extinguished the fire, which was burning in a coal barbecue in the backyard.

Crawley told police he lit the fire to cook his sausage and egg breakfast in an attempt to save on his electricity bills.

He said despite watching television last night, he was not aware of the catastrophic fire warning and total fire ban in place across NSW.

Police said the fire had the potential to cause “serious harm” to neighbouring residents and properties.

The man was fined $400.

He will face court again on breach of bail matters on December 4.
