PERFORMING several times a day for most days of the year never gets old for Lachy Gillespie.
The purple skivvy-wearing member of The Wiggles says seeing the children’s excited faces in the audience is the best part of doing live shows.
“There’s nothing better than performing for children,” he says.
“They are so responsive that you always have to be on your game.
“When it does work it is so rewarding because they laugh and they throw in a funny little answer back at you.
“They have no inhibitions about telling you what they are feeling.”
Gillespie says that straightforward honesty often extends to vocalising who their favourite performer is — which is something that has come up a lot for Gillespie during his recent tour of Western Australia performing with his wife and fellow Wiggle Emma Watkins.
“They like Lachy too but there’s so much yellow in the audience and when Emma goes off to do costume changes a lot of the boys call out ‘where’s Emma?’ and it’s clear that they are not really interested in anyone else,” he says.
But Gillespie is more than happy to share the limelight with Watkins and the other Wiggles members, who are preparing to start a new show next month.
Sydney audiences will be the first to see The Wiggle Wiggle Wiggle! tour, which will be performed at entertainment venues across the city from March 14 to 29 before heading to more than 150 venues in every state in Australia.
Tickets to the show are selling like hot potatoes and it will be full of lots of the classic songs, as well as plenty of new material.
The Wiggles will also be joined on stage by many familiar characters, including Dorothy the Dinosaur, Captain Feathersword, Wags the Dog and Henry the Octopus.
“The best part of the year for us is to get out and perform for the people in Australia,” Gillespie says.
“We get so many comments from the parents saying the children really enjoyed the smaller shows as opposed to the arenas because it’s much more close and they can get up and dance.”
