A Sydney man threatened to jump on his ex-partner’s head during a chilling recorded phone conversation.
Jye Matthew Roach-Reid, 31, pleaded guilty to one charge of stalking or intimidating with intention to cause fear of harm in Blacktown Local Court on Wednesday, June 5, after he threatened the woman during a recorded phone call.
The court was told the woman had missed Roach-Reid’s first call and called him back to record their conversation, where Roach-Reid said he was “sick to death”.
The court heard he made repeated threats to the woman involving violence, including claims of “flogging”.
The woman then made a suggestion, described by Magistrate Debra Maher as “a provocative statement”, to Roach-Reid about his comments, which were incorrect, and angered him further.
He then said he would “jump on (the woman’s) head”.
Lawyer Joshua Warren told the court there was an Apprehended Violence Order had since been imposed.
He told the court his client had poor mental health at the time of the incident and was essentially having a mental breakdown when he called his ex-partner.
His client was now working as a metal roofer and was the only financial support for his family, Mr Warren said.
Magistrate Debra Maher said while Roach-Reid’s threatening comments were not justified, the “provocative statement” from his ex-partner provided context to the offending.
He was sentenced to complete an 18 month community corrections order.
