A western Sydney man found with hundreds of files of child abuse material, including images of minors he had personally taken on public transport and saved to a folder labelled ‘Random Faps’ has been jailed.

Julien Joseph Stevens, 29, of Werrington, had his home searched by the Australian Federal Police last March and what they uncovered was truly shocking.

Inside Stevens’ property, police located a number of electronic devices which depicted child abuse and child pornography.

One device police located was a Google Pixel phone which the police fact sheet stated contained “hundreds of images and video files” of child abuse material.

It was on this device the folder ‘Random Faps’ was discovered, which contained about 100 images of young females snapped personally by Stevens while travelling on a train.

Those images were of children kneeling and bending over seats with police estimating the children ranged in ages from infants to 12 years old. The same folder also contained videos of him masturbating, court documents state.

During a search of his bedroom police uncovered a doll which had been used in a masturbating video located on one of his electronic devices as well as a packet of Huggies nappies, a dildo and a pair of female children’s school shoes.

In the boot of his Holden Commodore police seized a briefcase which contained a various assortment of infant children’s clothing as well as a photo of a naked infant in a blanket.

In an interview conducted by police following his arrest, the Werrington man admitted to police he had been attracted to minors since he was 18 and had masturbated with dolls and nappies.

Stevens told police he looked for images of children when he was “bored” and he was a member of a Kik group chat which had shared child abuse material, the court heard.

Stevens pleaded guilty to the charges of possess child abuse material obtained using a carriage, two counts of access child pornography obtained using a carriage service and three counts of accessing child abuse material using a carriage service.

In Penrith District Court on Monday the court heard Stevens had acknowledged since his arrest what he was doing was wrong.

On sentencing Stevens, Judge Karen Robinson said she saw “no other alternative” to full time imprisonment, however noted that Stevens had undergone extensive counselling and it was her view he had good prospects of rehabilitation.

“I see an aggregate sentence is appropriate and it is important that I impose a sentence that is not crushing to the offender, particularly noting this will be the offenders first time in full time custody and it is in the courts view that he has good prospects of rehabilitation,” she said.

Stevens was sentenced to two years and three months jail. He will be eligible for release as part of a reconnaissance release order after 12 months, with the conditions he is supervised by a community service officer and undertake treatment such as psychological counselling.
