A western Sydney man who police allege used a forklift to break into a Prospect warehouse and steal thousands of bottles of hand sanitiser has denied the charges.

John Mathew Weyman, 36, of Cranebrook, faced Blacktown Local Court on Thursday, pleading not guilty to breaking and entering with intent to commit a serious indictable offence over the alleged night-time sanitiser stealing spree on September 1 - during the coronavirus pandemic.

According to court documents, police allege Weyman stole 45 boxes of hand sanitiser, containing 5000 bottles, along with a box of face masks, from Global Auto Parts warehouse in Rowood Rd, Prospect.

It’s alleged Weyman used the business’ forklift to break into a garage door before he pilfered the boxes by loading them onto the back of his Toyota Landcruiser between 1am and 2am.

CCTV cameras allegedly captured Mr Weyman’s vehicle visiting and leaving the business on the night of the alleged theft.

He faces a further charge of not disclosing his identity as a driver, after he allegedly refused to tell police who he was when they pulled him over in Cranebrook the following afternoon.

He pleaded not guilty to both charges at Blacktown Local Court on Thursday.

Magistrate Bree Chisholm advised that he speak to a lawyer before his next court date.

“These are serious charges … I strongly advise that you consider getting legal advice,” Magistrate Chisholm said.

Mr Weyman will return to court on December 3.
