UPDATE

A man extradited from Queensland who is charged over the alleged gang rape of a woman in Sydney’s north west will make a bid for bail.

Joe Noamua Tauiliili, 31, had his case briefly mentioned at Penrith Local Court on Friday where he was due to apply for bail after being charged with six counts of aggravated sexual assault in company.

It comes one week after he was refused bail in Central Local Court after being extradited from Queensland.

His lawyer Vinny Vinjay sought to proceed with a release application today, however, the case was held over till Monday to allow police to obtain copies of Tauiliili’s interstate criminal history.

The court heard Tauiliili had a criminal record in Victoria, but no criminal history in NSW. However, Magistrate Fiona Toose requested access to his history in South Australia, where he resides.

Tauiliili is one of three men charged over the alleged gang rape of a 37-year-old woman whom they met at pub in Rouse Hill on Anzac Day eve.

A man has appeared in court having been extradited from Queensland and charged over the alleged aggravated sexual assault of a woman in Sydney’s north-west last month.

On April 29, officers attached to Blacktown Police Area Command received a report that a woman had been sexually assaulted by three unknown men.

Detectives from the State Crime Command’s Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad were notified and took carriage of the investigation under Strike Force Kempbridge.

Officers were told that the 37-year-old woman met three men at a licenced premise at Rouse Hill on Saturday 24 April 2021.

A court earlier this week heard the men took the woman to a home at Riverstone, where she was allegedly sexually assaulted on several occasions by the group in the early hours of Anzac Day, April 25.

The woman left the home and sought medical treatment at Blacktown Hospital on April 26, before contacting police.

Following extensive inquiries, strike force detectives arrested Josateki Setuata, 26, at a home at Riverstone and Glenn Robinson, 35, at a home at Valley Heights about 2pm on May 4.

The pair were charged and remain before the courts.

As part of ongoing inquiries, Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Joe Noamua Tauiliili, 31, believed to be interstate.

Following further investigations, strike force detectives, with assistance from Queensland Police Service, arrested Tauiliili at Amberley, Brisbane, about 2pm on Wednesday (5 May 2021).

He was taken to Brisbane watch house and charged with the outstanding interstate warrant.

He appeared at Brisbane Magistrates Court yesterday (Thursday 6 May 2021), where detectives applied for, and were granted, his extradition to NSW.

Tauiliili was escorted back to Sydney and taken to Mascot Police Station, where he was charged with an outstanding warrant for six counts of aggravated sexual assault – offender in company with other persons.

He was refused bail to appear at Central Local Court on Friday.

He did not appear on screen for the appearance but was represented by his lawyer Vinny Vinjay.

The matter was adjourned for one week to Friday May 14.

Mr Vinjay indicated he would apply for bail on the next occasion.

The court heard the matter was strictly indictable and brief service would be required by July 2.

Robinson and Setuata appeared before Penrith and Blacktown courts respectively earlier this week.

At Robinson’s hearing the court heard Robinson and a friend were allegedly drinking at The Fiddler in Rouse Hill in the early hours of Anzac Day when they invited the woman back to a house in Riverstone where the alleged rape took place.

Robinson, who has worked as a corrective services officer for five years and served with the Australian Army for more than a decade, appeared at court from custody via audiovisual link, with his partner, colleagues and friends supporting him from the gallery.

Reading aloud police documents in court, Magistrate James Gibson said it was alleged the woman had been drinking heavily at the pub when she met Robinson and another man, before an Uber was ordered to take her to the Riverstone address where a third man was present.

Police allege the next thing the woman remembered was waking up on a couch in the lounge room with a belt tied around her neck to choke her and one of the co-accuseds having sex with her from behind.

The woman allegedly told police she was “passed around the three men who had sex with her in multiple ways, either at the same time or individually while the others were watching, at one pointing dressing her up like an Anzac in a navy blue army jacket”, Magistrate Gibson read.

Robinson remains in custody and will be back before the court in July.

Setuata was bailed ahead of his next appearance.
