A Sydney father threatened to shoot his former partner and their child via a series of chilling text messages, in a horrific display of domestic violence.

Ian George Edwards, 31, faced Blacktown Court with one supporter on Wednesday when he was sentenced for the terrifying crime on June 19.

Court documents state Edwards and his ex-partner were arguing over medical care for their young daughter, who had influenza and was staying with Edwards at the time.

The argument then took a chilling turn when Edwards made a series of threats to shoot his ex partner.

“And you c--t, I’m now sick cos she’s sick you knew what the situation was before she came (sic),” court documents state Edwards said.

“If I can’t spend time with my nan before she goes cos your (sic) a selfish mutt and only care about your own house, I swear use will see bullets (sic).

“(I don’t care) show this (message) to who you want I mean it c--t.

“lol think im joking cos if you knew the truth your mouths wouldn’t be as smart as they are… (sic).”

Court documents state the couple continued to argue over text message until his ex-partner asked “how can I get my child if you’ve threatened to shoot us?”.

Edwards then replied: “I don’t give a flying f--k c--t use wait this s--t your gonna regret ... every second”, and later called the threats to shoot her “a f---ing guarantee”.

The documents state police were contacted a few hours later and spoke to Edwards’ ex-partner before going to Edwards’ house to speak to him directly.

The documents state Edwards confirmed to police he had sent those messages, but regretted it. He was then arrested and taken to Blacktown police station.

Lawyer Naomi Steinberg told the court during her client’s sentencing that he wasn’t “feeling stable” on the day of the offences.

Edwards had become aware of some mental health issues in the lead up to the offences, and went to a doctor to receive a mental health treatment plan for anger issues, anxiety, PTSD and childhood trauma.

She said Edwards had witnessed domestic violence growing up.

Edwards’ grandmother, referenced in the text messages as “nan”, was diagnosed with a terminal illness shortly before the day of the offence, and Edwards was stressed about passing on influenza from his daughter to his grandmother when going to visit her.

Additionally, Ms Steinberg said Edwards’ daughter had spent two more days with him than what had been arranged.

She called the offence an “isolated incident” and said Edwards understood he needed help.

Edwards pleaded guilty to stalking or intimidating with intending to cause fear of physical or mental harm (domestic violence offence).

He was sentenced to a 12-month community correction order.
