A man who stiffed a mobile repairman $700 and ghosted the police has been convicted in a western Sydney court.
Schofields resident, Gagandeep Singh, 23, faced Blacktown Local Court on Tuesday, where he was convicted of dishonestly obtaining financial advantage by deception and stalking or intimidating.
Documents tendered to the court state on March 8 2024, Singh contacted a mobile repair service operating out of a residential home in order to fix his broken iPhone.
The mobile repairman quoted Singh $700, which he agreed to before he dropped his phone off.
Singh returned to pick up his phone later that night and refused to pay the bill, threatening the repairman saying “don’t follow me I have a knife” while patting his front left pocket.
Singh jumped into a car and fled the scene, with the repairman following in his own car.
The repairman eventually had to cease his car chase after being told multiple times by a triple-0 operator who he had called to pull over.
Singh was reported to the police and, more than a month later, was detained by members of the public on an unrelated civil matter.
Officers spoke with Singh, who initially claimed his phone was never broken before admitting to police he had his phone repaired by the repairman.
Singh gave the officers a number to contact him but avoided calls before he was eventually tracked down.
In court on Tuesday, Magistrate Rami Attia noted Singh didn’t show “genuine remorse” for his actions and sentenced him to a 12-month community corrections order (CCO).
Mr Attia warned Singh to comply with the CCO or face the consequences.
“Mr Singh, because of your non-appearance in the past, if the police turn up and if they can’t find you, a warrant will be issued for your arrest,” he said.
In addition to the CCO, Singh has been fined $900 and ordered to pay the $700 compensation to the repairman.
