A young father who touched a woman’s bottom on a western Sydney bus because he “lusted after her”, will have to attend a sexual offender treatment program.

Frederick Amituanai, 27, of Oakhurst, was sentenced at Mt Druitt Local Court on Wednesday after pleading guilty to one count of sexual touching without consent.

Police said the father-of-four had spent one hour walking between bus stands at Mt Druitt on the morning of June 4 before he followed a young woman onto an empty bus and sat directly behind her.

Shortly into the journey to Plumpton, Amituanai reached around the side of the woman’s seat and touched her behind, prompting her to confront him.

He apologised and the woman left the bus before reporting the incident to police.

Following a public appeal from police, Amituanai handed himself into police and admitted he had touched the woman for his own “sexual gratification”.

Court papers revealed the extent of his addiction to pornography and the lust behind his actions on the bus.

His defence lawyer told the court he had struggled with a personal tragedy around the time of the incident.

“He’s expressed remorse and contrition and a desire to address the underlying factors that were at play when he committed the offences,” the defence said.

“This reflects appalling behaviour and it’s fortunate he came across a victim who was forthright who made her feelings known. It stopped right there and an apology was made.”

Magistrate Fiona Toose, in citing a report tendered to the court, said it was concerning he had tried to downplay his actions.

“You might think you want to have sex with someone, but that doesn’t mean they want to have sex with you,” Magistrate Toose said.

“I think you’ve been on a bit of a journey of self-indulgence and the way you’ve been dealing with it is not appropriate.

“Women should be entitled to be on public transport without being in fear of being molested by a complete stranger.

“You need to change how you view members of the opposite sex.”

He was placed on a Community Corrections Order for three years and was ordered to undertake a sexual offender treatment program.
