A man allegedly tested positive for methamphetamine following a bizarre police chase across a drive-through, a service station and a string of suburbs in Sydney’s west before ending up in a police station carpark.
Mt Druitt man Lee Bracken, 44, faced Mt Druitt Local Court on Monday, where he was hit with several charges including police pursuit, driving recklessly, not complying with direction given by a police officer, stealing and driving a car, goods in personal custody suspected being stolen, and hindering or resisting police officer in the execution of duty.
Mt Druitt police arrested Bracken after he was driving a white Mazda allegedly stolen from St Marys when they spotted him travelling in the wrong direction on the M4 ramp at Colyton on Monday about 12.15am.
Police attempted to pull the vehicle over but Bracken allegedly led police on a 25-minute pursuit across Minchinbury, Rooty Hill, St Marys and Mt Druitt.
He consistently drove 10km under the speed limit in several areas.
Despite it not being a high-speed pursuit, Mt Druitt Superintendent Darrin Batchelor said the way Bracken drove was still a cause for concern to police.
“The erratic driving of that male put several members of the public at great risk during that pursuit,” he said.
Polices said the vehicle went through several red lights, a McDonald’s drive-through and a 7-Eleven service station during the pursuit.
Police said Bracken stopped at a 7-Eleven, grabbed one of the watering cans, drank from it and threw it at police before continuing the pursuit.
Road spikes were deployed by police in Rooty Hill and managed to pop one of the car’s tyres, but Bracken allegedly continued to drive.
The chase ended after he drove to the Mt Druitt Police Station carpark, with a few police cars blocking him in.
Bracken then allegedly rammed the station’s heavy gates in an effort to escape.
Police said Bracken allegedly resisted arrest, resulting in several police officers being injured before a Taser was deployed.
He was taken to Blacktown Hospital under police guard for further tests, and was released by 12pm.
He faced Mt Druitt Local Court on Monday and has been taken to a mental health facility for assessment.
“We did a drug test at the scene which returned with a positive for methamphetamine, so he’s been taken to hospital for further mandatory testing,” Supt Batchelor said.
He said the chase was “highly unusual”.
“He certainly knows the location of the police station,” he said.
“We’re looking at several offences at the moment. The car that he was driving was subsequently reported as stolen after the arrest this morning, so we will be laying several charges, including police pursuit, resist arrest, assaulting police and obviously there will be several traffic offences as well to be added.’’
Supt Batchelor said the damage to the police carpark gate would take up to a fortnight to fix.
