A Blue Mountains man who allegedly possessed and distributed child abuse material, including to himself, has been slapped with new drugs charges.

Stephen Phillip Cartwright, 38, of Warragamba is charged with using a carriage service to possess, publish, and distribute child abuse material, as well as two counts of recording intimate images without consent.

Between December 18-19 2021, Cartwright allegedly used a service to transmit child abuse material.

Between February and March of the following year, he is further alleged to have again gained accessed to, and transmitted, child abuse material, including to himself, court documents reveal.

Around the same time, Cartwright is alleged to have recorded intimate images of two different people without their consent. Police documents allege one of the two charges is domestic violence related.

Appearing at Penrith Local Court on Friday, Cartwright’s lawyer said Cartwright had been slapped with two further drugs charges, relating to the alleged possession of about 260g of cannabis and one cannabis plant.

He also faces a further charge of possessing a prohibited weapon.

Cartwright’s lawyer told Magistrate Gregory Moore “not much had happened” since Cartwright last appeared before the western Sydney court late-last year, despite aborted plans for a case conference to be held.

“The defence has still not been provided with pictures and videos it requested,” Cartwright’s lawyer said.

“Without that, no meaningful case conference can take place.”

Cartwright’s lawyer said the drugs and weapons charges – while unrelated and being handled by the police, not the Commonwealth Department of Public Prosecutions, formed part of detectives’ investigations.

Furthermore, he said the charges would also be important to future negotiations with prosecutors.

Cartwright, who did not observe the proceedings on Friday, remains in custody on remand.

He will reappear before the Penrith Local Court on February 17 for a case conference.
