After putting out a call for nominations for the Blacktown and Mt Druitt area’s best butcher or deli and counting the votes in our online poll, the winner can be revealed.

Blacktown Advocate readers had last week to vote for the best butcher/deli in the region, and after votes were cast, the winner is Woodcroft Quality Meats!

The Woodcroft family business was a standout winner in the competition, pulling in a stream of votes from happy customers.

Owner Grant Slingerland took over the much-respected local business about five years ago, with his parents Tracey and Ron, and sisters, joining the business in recent years.

Since then, Manager Tracey Slingerland said the family has vowed to uphold the business’ formidable reputation.

“It was a good business that had been here for 30 years and we’ve just continued the motto of quality from the original owners,” Ms Slingerland said.

“We make sure everything we sell is quality. We don’t buy carton meat or anything in packages.

“Everything you see in the window is fresh off the body.”

Ms Slingerland said the business sourced top-quality beef from Victoria, with their lamb and pork from a farm in Cowra.

She said customers travelled from all over Sydney to their shop to source meat for their next barbecue.

“Our customers come from all over the place,” she said.

“We have customers who might’ve lived in the area 20 years ago and may live on the Northern Beaches and they’ll come back.

“We have a whole family that moved into Strathfield, so now they come out here every second weekend and buy an esky full of meat. We also have people who take our meat to the Philippines for their family.

“We even had a birthday party relocated from Melbourne. They couldn’t get any decent meat, so they moved the birthday party up here so they could have our meat.”

The Slingerlands encouraged people to “shop small” in what has been a challenging year at times for butchers.

“If people don’t support their local butcher they are going to be gone,” Ms Slingerland said.

“We really appreciate everyone that voted for us and really appreciate that everyone realises how good we can do it here.”
