King’s Birthday might be a holiday weekend for a lot of people but there will still be plenty of football on around the state.

Here is a list of what to look out for this weekend.

METRO FIXTURES

EASTERN

Premier Division: Balwyn v Noble Park at Balwyn Park, 2.20pm.

The Tigers and Bulls lock horns in the traditional long weekend fixture. Balwyn, the reigning premier, has won its past four matches after starting 0-2 and should be hot-favourite – but can Noble Park (2-4) cause an upset?

Division 3: Knox v Donvale at Knox Gardens Reserve, 2.20pm, Oakleigh District v The Basin at Princes Highway Reserve at 2.20pm, Scoresby v Upper Ferntree Gully at Scoresby Recreation Reserve at 2.20pm, Ferntree Gully v Fairpark at Wally Tew Reserve at 2.20pm.

ESSENDON DISTRICT

Premier Division: Aberfeldie v Strathmore at Windy Hill, 2.15pm

A standalone fixture between two of the competition’s biggest clubs. The duo is currently locked in the top-three where a win for the Mores, who sit second, would go a long way to securing a double chance. Profits from the day will be donated to the Pat Cronin Foundation.

MORNINGTON PENINSULA

Division 1: Rosebud v Sorrento at Olympic Park, Rosebud, 2pm

The Buds have been this season’s standout improvers, securing seven victories from eight matches to lead the competition. Campbell Hustwaite dominates intercept possessions, while ex-league players Mitch White and Billy Hartung deliver exceptional football. Sorrento, fresh from an impressive win against Pines, defeated Rosebud at Olympic Park last year. The Sharks will rely heavily on former AFL talents Dylan and Ryan Clarke, with Chad Harris and Tom Cameron being crucial inclusions.

Division 1: Red Hill v Dromana, at Red Hill Recreation Reserve, Sunday, 2pm.

This shapes as a crucial match with the Hillmen desperate to escape the bottom of the ladder while the Tigers aim to maintain their top-five position. League medal winner Michael Griechen has been in brilliant form for Red Hill alongside Dylan Atkins and Patrick MacDonald. Dromana’s Geurts brothers loom as match winners, with Sam leading the competition in disposals.

NORTHERN

Division 3: Kinglake v Mernda at Memorial Oval, 2.10pm, Reservoir v Epping at Crispe Park, 2.10pm, Heidelberg West v Fitzroy Stars at Heidelberg Park, 2.10pm, Ivanhoe v Lalor at Ivanhoe Park, 2.15pm, Kilmore v Old Eltham Collegians at JJ Clancy Reserve, 2.15pm.

No rest for the wicked in Division 3 with a full suite of matches over the long weekend. The Kinglake v Mernda clash is an early taste of finals, while Reservoir will provide a big test for Epping. While it’s expected to be a one-sided encounter, Heidelberg West will feature Collingwood great Heath Shaw in its clash with undefeated ladder-leader Fitzroy Stars.

SOUTHERN

Division 1: Cranbourne v Dingley at Amstel Reserve, 2pm, Port Melbourne v East Brighton at JL Murphy Reserve, 2pm, Springvale Districts v Narre Warren at Springvale Reserve, 2pm, St Paul’s McKinnon v Bentleigh at McKinnon Reserve, 2pm, Murrumbeena v Cheltenham at Murrumbeena Park, 2.30pm.

There’s no time for rest in the Southern league as the competition continues full steam ahead across the long weekend. Second-place St Paul’s McKinnon will host the in-form third-place Bentleigh in a local grudge match. There were just two points in it when the sides met in round 1. Meanwhile, East Brighton will be out to snap its two-match losing streak against the Port Melbourne Colts who will be in search of a second win.

Division 2: Caulfield Bears v Frankston Dolphins at Koornang Park, 2pm, Highett v Chelsea Heights at Highett Reserve, 2pm, Keysborough v East Malvern at Rowley Allan Reserve, 2pm, Endeavour Hills v Mordialloc at Barry Simon Reserve, 2.30pm.

There’s only four clashes set to take place with Doveton and Hampton Park to meet on July 12. Highett’s match against Chelsea Heights is sure to excite, with both sides nestled in the top four, while East Malvern will be hopeful of maintaining its one-game advantage over the chasing pack when it takes on Keysborough.

Division 3: Carrum Paterson Lakes v Berwick Springs at Rory Dore Reserve, 2pm, Skye v Ashwood at Carrum Downs Recreation Reserve, 2pm, South Mornington v Hampton at Citation Oval, 2pm, Lyndhurst v St Kilda City at Marriott Waters Reserve, 2pm, Black Rock v Heatherton at Donald McDonald Reserve at 2.30pm.

Carrum Patterson Lakes’ clash with Berwick Springs could well be the match of the round in the hotly contested Division 3. Carrum Patterson Lakes are flying high on top of the ladder but Southern newcomers Berwick Springs have made a fine start to life in the competition with a 5-3 record and will be out to hand CPL its third loss of the season. Skye will meet Ashwood, with both in search of a crucial win to lift them clear of the relegation threat.

Division 4: Dandenong West v Hallam at Greaves Reserve, 2pm, Doveton Eagles v Lyndale at Power Reserve, 2pm, Moorabbin Kangaroos v Narre South Saints at Moorabbin West, 2pm, Clayton v South Yarra at Meade Reserve, 2pm.

Ladder leaders Hallam and Dandenong West are set to meet in a crucial top of the table clash in Division 4. Meanwhile, after notching their first senior win in over 1000 days earlier this season, South Yarra has now chalked up four victories and is on a roll, The Yarras will meet Clayton in what shapes as a crucial clash in the finals race.

COUNTRY FIXTURES

The standouts

Sunraysia

Irymple v Robinvale Euston at Henshilwood Oval, 2.30pm.

A replay of the 2023 grand final. The Eagles are flying, currently 5-2, and only losing to Wentworth and Red Cliffs by a combined margin of six points. Irymple will be looking to maintain its spot in the finals with a win at home. The Eagles could have VFL player Phillip Moi Moi in action after he signed for the club for the rest of the season during the week.

Gippsland

Leongatha v Wonthaggi at Leongatha Recreation Reserve, 2.20pm.

The homecoming of Dyson Heppell is sure to be a cracker. The former Essendon captain will return home to play his second match for the season, looking to help the Parrots to a win against the Power. Both are 6-1, and tied for first with Moe, with the winner to move into the top-two. Wonthaggi, led by former Collingwood premiership player Jarryd Blair, have won its past six in the competition.

Geelong

St Joseph’s v Newtown & Chilwell at Herne Hill Reserve, 2.10pm on Sunday

Can Newtown & Chilwell end St Joseph’s start to the season? It shapes as a battle of two teams likely to feature towards the end of the year. St Joseph’s, led by 20 goals to Oscar Morrison, have won seven in a row to be two games clear on top. The Eagles, after losing two of their first three matches, have won their past four to sit third on the ladder.

Goulburn Valley

Mansfield v Shepparton Swans at Mansfield Recreation Reserve, 2pm.

Can the Swans bounce back after suffering their first loss of the season last week against Echuca? The Swans have impressed this season but now face another test in their bid to finish inside the top-six. Mansfield, currently 5-3, has had some tests recently, losing to Kyabram and Echuca, but have beaten last year’s grand finalists Shepparton Bears. The Eagles will be hoping to win and move closer to the top-four. Last week the team beat Benalla by 88 points with Harry Mahoney and ex-VFL players Max King and Callum Brown combining for 124 disposals. Another repeat effort this week will put them close to a win.

Ovens and Murray

Albury v Wodonga Bulldogs at Albury Sports Ground, 2pm.

A vital game which could shape the top-five. Both sides are on 4-3 but are currently sixth and seventh. Wodonga enters the contest on a three-game unbeaten run but face a challenge against the Tigers. Led by six goals from former AFL player Ryan Garthwaite the team won by 87 points over the Wodonga Raiders last week. The Tigers will be hoping to add the other Wodonga scalp this week.
