Prince Harry has blamed his brother Prince William and Kate Middleton for wearing a Nazi uniform to a costume party in 2005 that led to a massive scandal.
The Duke of Sussex has accused Prince and Princess of Wales of thinking the infamous costume was funny when he asked them for their opinion on wearing the Nazi uniform to a Native and Colonial-themed event, he revealed in his memoir Spare, sources told Page Six.
“I phoned Willy and Kate, asked them what they thought. Nazi uniform, they said,” Prince Harry wrote, in a segment of the book obtained by Page Six.
“They both howled. Worse that Willy’s leotard outfit! Way more ridiculous! Which, again, was the point.”
When the Prince, then aged 20, was photographed wearing desert uniform of General Erwin Rommel’s Afrika Korps, a huge scandal ensued – making global headlines and landing on the front cover of The Sun newspaper.
In the aftermath, Prince Harry said: “I am very sorry if I have caused any offence or embarrassment to anyone. It was a poor choice of costume and I apologise”.
He has since said it was one of the “biggest mistakes” of his life.
‘HE CAME AT ME’: PRINCE HARRY CLAIMS WILLIAM ATTACKED HIM
Prince Harry claims his brother Prince William violently assaulted him during a wild fight over Meghan Markle.
The shocking accusation against the Prince of Wales – and heir to the throne – is made in a sensational chapter of Prince Harry’s upcoming biography.
According to The Guardian, Prince Harry alleges Prince William “grabbed me by the collar, ripping my necklace, and … knocked me to the floor” leaving him with visible marks on his back.
The brothers reportedly fought at Nottingham Cottage, in Kensington Palace, when they met to discuss their spiralling relationship.
Prince Harry writes in Spare, that is released next week, Prince William called Meghan “difficult”, “rude” and “abrasive”, which Harry calls a “parrot[ing of] the press narrative”.
Their fight became more heated as they shouted over each other and prompted the alleged assault when Prince Harry accused his brother of acting like an heir.
That led to more insults, with Prince William claiming he was trying to help.
“Are you serious? Help me? Sorry – is that what you call this? Helping me?” Prince Harry is said to have told him.
Prince William then allegedly swore and followed him into the kitchen where a scared Harry had retreated to.
Prince Harry said that he gave his brother a glass of water and said: “Willy, I can’t speak to you when you’re like this.”
“He set down the water, called me another name, then came at me. It all happened so fast. So very fast. He grabbed me by the collar, ripping my necklace, and he knocked me to the floor. I landed on the dog’s bowl, which cracked under my back, the pieces cutting into me. I lay there for a moment, dazed, then got to my feet and told him to get out.”
Prince Harry claims his brother taunted him to fight back, like when they were children, but when he wouldn’t, Prince William left.
He returned soon after looking “regretful and apologised” and urged Prince Harry not to tell Ms Markle.
“You don’t need to tell Meg about this,” he reportedly said.
When Prince Harry said “You mean that you attacked me?” he was told: “‘I didn’t attack you, Harold.’”
The contents of Spare have been a closely guarded secret with tight security to avoid any leaks and the explosive revelations will cause even more tension between Prince Harry and his family.
Prince Harry didn’t immediately tell his wife, but did tell his therapist, but said Ms Markle later noticed “scrapes and bruises” on his back before he confessed.
“[She] wasn’t that surprised, and wasn’t all that angry,” Harry writes.
“She was terribly sad.”
In another chapter, Harry recalls meeting with the then Prince Charles and Prince William after the Windsor Castle funeral of Prince Philip in April 2021.
He claims his father stood between his sons and said: “Please, boys, don’t make my final years a misery.”
NO GOING BACK
The Duke of Sussex has conceded there is no going back for him as a full-time member of the royal family after launching a series of barbs that stunned the palace.
Asked by CBS interviewer Anderson Cooper whether Prince Harry can see himself returning to the fold after splitting from the royal family three years ago, he bluntly replies “no”.
In a trailer for the news show 60 Minutes, to air on Sunday, the prince admits there is too much water under the bridge and the reason he has been vocal about his departure is “every single time I‘ve tried to do it privately, there has been briefings and leakings and planting of stories against me and my wife”.
In a second televised interview promoting his autobiography Spare, to also air on Sunday, he tells British ITV News star Tom Bradby: “I would like my father back, I would like my brother back, not the institution.”
Mr Bradby has hinted the future King has terminated their friendship after he was seen to side with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex when they split from the royal family.
While the respected news presenter once enjoyed a close friendship with both the Prince of Wales and Prince Harry, Mr Bradby says that over recent years, William has ejected him out of his inner circle.
The former ITV royal correspondent is presenting a special interview with Harry on January 8 which is expected to contain more damning criticism of the monarch and their handling of the Sussexes’ departure from The Firm.
The correspondent was invited to the weddings of both Prince William and Prince Harry and he was even hand-picked to interview William and Kate following their engagement in 2010.
But last year the friendship between William and Mr Bradby appeared “very much over” because of Harry and Meghan‘s royal exit in early 2020, an insider said.
A year previously in 2019, the journalist narrated Harry and Meghan‘s “An African Journey” documentary, which laid the groundwork for the couple’s departure from the Royal Family just a few months later.
Last June Tom admitted to feeling in an “awkward position” regarding his friendship with Harry and William.
Speaking to RadioTimes, the ITV News host discussed the brothers’ feud, adding that their falling out was “difficult” for him and how he’d felt “a little bit caught in the middle”.
A royal insider said: “The friendship between William and Tom is very much over. The duke feels let down by Bradby and the way he’s acted over the past few months.”
In a separate interview with GQ, also in 2021, he revealed the origins of his relationship with the royals and admitted William is not one of his “proper friends”.
