Donald Trump returned to the Republican National Convention, where his daughter-in-law Lara gave an emotional speech and former rivals threw their support behind him. Follow live updates.

Republican National Committee co-chair Lara Trump, Donald Trump's daughter-in-law, rounded off the second night of the Republican convention.

 

She said she had a "very different speech" planned until the attempted assassination of the former president.

"Nothing prepares you for a moment like that," Ms Trump said.

She said his defiant response to the attempted assassination was a signal to the world "that America will always prevail".

"Not even a bullet is strong enough to break our American grit and our American soul," Ms Trump said.

“He is a lion, he is bold, he is strong, he is fearless, and he is exactly what this country needs right now.

She said she had “seen this man dragged through hell and back … and yet, he has never backed down".

Nikki Haley and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, once Donald Trump's rivals, threw their support behind the Republican contender for president.

"For the sake of our nation, we have to go with Donald Trump," she said, as Trump looked on from the audience.
