Rudy Giuliani takes a tumble on Day 2 of RNC

Republican National Committee co-chair Lara Trump, Donald Trump's daughter-in-law, rounded off the second night of the Republican convention.

She said she had a "very different speech" planned until the attempted assassination of the former president.

"Nothing prepares you for a moment like that," Ms Trump said.

She said his defiant response to the attempted assassination was a signal to the world "that America will always prevail".

"Not even a bullet is strong enough to break our American grit and our American soul," Ms Trump said.

“He is a lion, he is bold, he is strong, he is fearless, and he is exactly what this country needs right now.

She said she had “seen this man dragged through hell and back … and yet, he has never backed down".

Nikki Haley and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, once Donald Trump's rivals, threw their support behind the Republican contender for president.

"For the sake of our nation, we have to go with Donald Trump," she said, as Trump looked on from the audience.

'Dragged through hell and back': Lara Trump

Ms Trump said Donald Trump was "a wonderful father, father-in-law and of course grandfather to my two children".

"This is a man who has sacrificed for his family and who has truly sacrificed for his country," she said.

"Donald Trump didn't need to run for president for fame or money.

"I'll tell you why he did it … even in the face of the unthinkable: because he loves this country."

"He did it for his grandchildren, for your children and grandchildren, and for the generations to come.

"I have seen this man dragged through hell and back … and yet, he has never backed down."

'Nothing dangerous about putting Americans first': Rubio

A prime-time speaking slot at the convention was handed to Florida senator Marco Rubio, who Trump overlooked to be his running mate.

Senator Rubio nonetheless praised Trump for transforming the Republican Party and inspiring a movement.

"There is nothing dangerous or divisive about putting Americans first," he said.

He also hailed Trump's vice presidential pick JD Vance, whose life he said showed that "we are all descendants of ordinary people who achieved extraordinary things".

'We must keep going': Lara Trump

Republican National Committee co-chair Lara Trump, his daughter-in-law, rounded off the second night of the convention.

She said she had a "very different speech" planned until the attempted assassination of the former president.

"Nothing prepares you for a moment like that," Ms Trump said.

She said she had to move her children away from the TV as they watched the shooting unfold live on the weekend.

"If Donald Trump has shown us anything, it's that when it feels impossible to keep going, those are the times we must keep going," Ms Trump added.

She said that all her father-in-law wanted to do was to make America great, an ambition that had hardened in the wake of the assassination attempt.

"There is more that unites us than divides us," Ms Trump said.

"We all want this country to be great even if we don't agree on the best way of doing that."

"He is exactly what this country needs right now."

'No weapon formed against you shall prosper': Carson

Former secretary of housing and urban development, Ben Carson, took to the stage at the Republican convention, saying Donald Trump could not be stopped.

“Like many of you, last week, I watched with horror as the events unfolded in that Pennsylvania field. I saw president Trump, a dear friend, escape death by mere inches, and my thoughts immediately turned to the book of Isaiah that says, ‘No weapon formed against you shall prosper,’” said Mr Carson.

“Well, let me tell you the weapons that they use. First they try to ruin his reputation, and he’s more popular now than ever. And then they tried to bankrupt him, and he’s got more money now than he had before. And then they tried to put him in prison, and he’s freer and has made other people free with him. And then, and then, last weekend, they tried to kill him, And there he is, over there, alive and well,” Mr Carson said.

Murder victim's brother slams Biden, Harris

The brother of a 37-year-old mother murdered by an illegal Salvadorian migrant said President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have still not offered his family their condolences.

"Open borders are often portrayed as compassionate and virtuous, but there is nothing compassionate about allowing violent criminals into our country and robbing children of their mother," said Michael Morin, the brother of Maryland woman Rachel Morin.

"My sister's death as preventable. The monster arrested for killing Rachel entered the US unlawfully after killing a woman in el Salvador," he told the convention.

"Yet to this day we have not heard from Joe Biden or Kamala Harris."

Iran plot to kill Trump

Earlier today an Iranian plot to assassinate Trump was revealed.

After becoming aware of the threat, the Biden administration reached out to senior officials at the Secret Service to make them aware, US officials said, adding it was shared with the lead agent on Trump’s protection detail and the Trump campaign.

US authorities obtained intelligence from a “human source” before the weekend’s attempted assassination of Trump and that the Secret Service “added protective resources and capabilities to the former president’s security detail”.

Security concerns were so serious that the Trump campaign at one point stopped holding spontaneous off-the-record events where guests weren’t screened by the Secret Service, CNN said.

Trump ordered the killing of Soleimani, who led the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’s Quds Force, in 2020.

There is currently no connection between the Iranian plot and to the weekend shooter Thomas Matthew Crooks, according to several people briefed on the matter.

Sanders mocks First Lady Jill Biden

Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders also mocked First Lady Jill Biden in fher speech as she recalled taking her son to work one day.

"I got the chance to take my four-year-old son to bring your son to work day — much like Jill drags Joe to bring your husband to work day," she joked to laughter.
