JD Vance has used his speech at the Republican convention to declare: "Tonight is a night of hope." It comes after Joe Biden tested positive to Covid. Follow live updates. 

Ohio Senator JD Vance, Donald Trump's newly anointed running mate, used his speech to declare: "Tonight is a night of hope."

But he acknowledged it could have been a night of "heartbreak and mourning", in the wake of the former president's brush with death.

"He didn't need politics, but the country needed him," Senator Vance said.

It comes after Donald Trump Jnr launched an all-out attack on President Joe Biden,  asking whether Mr Biden was even "running the country".

Meanwhile, the White House confirmed the US President tested positive to Covid and was “experiencing mild symptoms”. 

He will "continue to carry out all of his duties fully during that time”, the White House said.
