Republican National Convention Live Updates:JD Vance takes centre stage

JD Vance has used his speech at the Republican convention to declare: "Tonight is a night of hope." It comes after Joe Biden tested positive to Covid. Follow live updates.

Crowd goes wild again as Donald Trump arrives for Day 3 of the RNC

Ohio Senator JD Vance, Donald Trump's newly anointed running mate, used his speech to declare: "Tonight is a night of hope."

But he acknowledged it could have been a night of "heartbreak and mourning", in the wake of the former president's brush with death.

"He didn't need politics, but the country needed him," Senator Vance said.

It comes after Donald Trump Jnr launched an all-out attack on President Joe Biden,  asking whether Mr Biden was even "running the country".

Meanwhile, the White House confirmed the US President tested positive to Covid and was “experiencing mild symptoms”.

He will "continue to carry out all of his duties fully during that time”, the White House said.

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi privately told President Joe Biden in a recent conversation that polling shows he can't beat Donald Trump and that the president could destroy Democrats’ chances of winning in November if he continues seeking a second term, CNN reports.

The president told Pelosi according to sources, he has seen polls that indicate he can win, one source said. Another one of the sources described Biden as getting defensive about the polls.

Rapper's song trending after Trump shooting

Rapper entrepreneur 50 Cent is making coin in the wake of the Trump assassination attempt.

The rapper's classic track Many Men (Wish Death) has become the soundtrack to countless TikTok videos and memes in the wake of the Butler shooting as online creators draw parallels between the Trump incident and how 50 Cent rose to fame after being shot nine times.

Most of the Trump-related videos use the chorus lyric: "Many men/ Wish death ‘pon me”.

50 Cent reacted to the song going off on social media – its streams increased by 250 per cent over the past few days – by posting a photoshopped version of the cover of his seminal Get Rich or Die Tryin' record with Trump's head in place of his own.
"Trump gets shot and now I'm trending," he posted on X.

Never one to miss an opportunity to turn a viral moment into a money spinner, 50 Cent has been offering limited edition Many Men T-shirts through his social media channels since the assassination attempt.

'I will be a vice president who never forgets where he came from'

Senator Vance said he would "never take for granted" the trust Trump had placed in him by choosing him as his running mate.

"I will give you everything I have," he told supporters.

"I will be a vice president who never forgets where he came from."

"For every single day of the next four years, when I walk into that White House to help President Trump, I will be doing it for you. For your family, for your future and for this great country."

JD Vance introduces 'clean and sober' mum

The Republican vice presidential pick proudly introduced his mother Beverly, who he said had been "clean and sober" for a decade.

She fought back tears as she applauded him from Trump's box in the crowd, where she was seated alongside Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson.

"JD's mum, JD's mum," the crowd chanted.

Senator Vance said: "Mum, I was thinking, it'll be 10 years officially in January of 2025 … If President Trump is okay with it, let's have the celebration in the White House."

'Most interesting person I know': JD's wife

Milwaukee's Fiserv Forum is as close to capacity as it has been all week on the third night of the convention for Ohio senator JD Vance's speech to accept the Republican Party's vice presidential nomination.

The 39-year-old was introduced by his wife Usha, who met him at Yale Law School.

"We were friends first, because who wouldn't want to be friends with JD," she said.

"He was then – as he is now – the most interesting person I knew."

Usha said his idea of a good time was playing with puppies and watching the movie Babe.

She said he was always determined to build his own strong family, having struggled through a traumatic childhood wracked by poverty and drug addiction.

JD Vance 'humbled and overwhelmed'

"Tonight, I stand here humbled and I'm overwhelmed with gratitude to say I officially accept your nomination to be the next vice president of the United States of America," Senator Vance said.

"Never in my wildest imagination would I have believed that I could be standing tonight."

He described his upbringing in Ohio, a place that had been "cast aside and forgotten by America's ruling class in Washington".

The 39-year-old recalled how Joe Biden's support for free trade deals cost jobs in his hometown.

"Somehow, a real estate developer from New York City by the name of Donald Trump was right on all of these issues while Biden was wrong," he said.

"President Trump knew even then that we needed a leader who would put Americans first."

"Some people tell me I've lived the American dream, and of course they're right, and I'm so grateful for it," he said.

"My most important American dream was becoming a good husband and a good dad."
"I wanted to give my kids the things that I didn't have when I was growing up."

Senator Vance told his three children – who he said were watching on TV back in their Milwaukee hotel room – to go to bed because it was 10pm.
