A Townsville woman has taken out the state’s top honour as Queensland Volunteer of the Year, for her tireless work in wildlife conservation and historic preservation.

With more than 40 years of volunteering service, Liz Downes was recognised for her significant contribution to wildlife conservation and historic preservation.

Ms Downes’ dedication to conservation started out of a passion for local wildlife and wanting to protect the environment.

“While wildlife conservation seems so big, I feel it is better to do something, even small, rather than nothing at all,” Ms Downes said. “I love what I do so it doesn’t feel like hard work for me.

“I really enjoy learning new skills, meeting like minded people and knowing that I am making a valuable and important contribution to the community.”

Ms Downes was also awarded the Heart of Volunteering award by Volunteering North Queensland earlier this year.

With more than 60 blog post stories written by Ms Downes and published on the James Cook University Library News Blog, her North Queensland history stories reach far and wide across the globe, turning up in google searches launched from anywhere in the world.

Ms Downes has volunteered continuously on a weekly basis for JCU Library Special Collections since 2012, where she has been credited with helping future generations of researchers, with her work contributing to increasing understanding of the place and value of historical records.
