Charters Towers Regional Council has approved the development of a full-size Coles supermarket with 232 shaded car spaces and a dedicated click-and-collect area.
Mayor Liz Schmidt said with the material change of use approved by councillors, nothing stands in the way of the supermarket’s construction.
“Council has approved a development application for a Material Change of Use for a new shopping centre at Goldtower Central at today’s General Meeting of Council,” Mayor Schmidt said.
“Public notification of the application received no objections and several supportive submissions, highlighting strong community interest and backing of the project.”
The Coles will be going into the Goldtower Central precinct.
Goldtower Central developer Paul McIver said bringing Coles to Charters Towers was a big win.
“Through research we identified that a lot of people are currently driving to Townsville to do their shopping,” Mr McIver said.
“We understand that shopping local is important to growing the town and wanted to stop the leakage of retail spend to Townsville.”
Currently Charters Towers is home to an IGA, Foodworks and Woolworths.
Mr McIver said Charters Towers deserved a full line, modern, supermarket.
“This $20m development will provide jobs during construction and will also provide retail job security for locals long into the future.”
Coles’ Tallis Ashley is in charge of the supermarket’s location leasing in Queensland, and said the company was committed to providing a convenient shopping experience, both in-store, and through online shopping.
“We are excited about delivering a new supermarket as part of the Goldtower development,” Mr Ashley said.
The supermarket will be constructed in the empty lot between the existing Goldtower buildings and the road.
