Telstra’s North Queensland workforce is settling into a new $32 million state-of-the-art office and warehouse facility in the Townsville CBD after the Honeycombes Property Group wrapped up construction late last year.

Following its exit from the River Quays building on Tomlins St, South Townsville, Telstra’s staff had been working from home while they waited for the “Our Hub” facility to be built at 524 Flinders St.

Honeycombes managing director Peter Honeycombe said construction started in July 2023 and wrapped up in November last year.

“The building is part of Honeycombes Property Group’s ‘Townsville Central Business Park’ master plan,” Mr Honeycombe said.

“Approximately 40 to 50 workers were present on site per day.

“The building features a rooftop break-out area, state-of-the-art fit-out, extensive glazing and premium office comfort and facilities, while focusing on environmentally sensitive design and operational characteristics.”

The facility was expected to contribute $39 million to Townsville’s economy annually.

Telstra regional general manager Rachel Cliffe said they were excited to have a new, modern facility for the Townsville Telstra team to come together to work and collaborate.

She said the new office, which will comfortably accommodate up to 170 employees at any given time, was inspired by, and modelled on, workplaces recently built in Western Sydney and Adelaide, which combine both office and warehouse capabilities.

“The new office reflects Telstra’s hybrid workplace model, designed to foster connections and effective collaboration,” Ms Cliffe said.

“It features a variety of workspaces, collaboration areas, meeting rooms, wellness facilities, flexible spaces for large team gatherings and a modern warehouse to support our field teams.

“A unique highlight of our Townsville workplace is the rooftop terrace, offering a perfect spot for coffee breaks, lunch, BBQs, games, or simply enjoying the view of Ross Creek.”

She said “Our Hub” was a modern, sustainable warehouse and workplace that provided their regional team with more flexibility and choice in where they wanted to work.

When she turned the sod for the building, Telstra CEO Vicki Brady said bringing their customer contact centres back into Australia was an important piece of their strategy to ensure they were “delivering at the best level for our customers”.

“Townsville’s an incredibly important part of our business with a big group of our team based here, so it’ll be great to have a new location where they can come together and deliver more for our customers,” Ms Brady said.
