Georgia Nesbitt is looking to the multi-sport Winter Challenge on the East Coast with pure excitement.
Given her recent backstory, it’s not hard to understand why.
In March 2023, after a serious cycling crash, the former elite rower was forced into 17 days in a coma and more than two months in hospital.
At her lowest moments, there were doubts she would walk again.
Nesbitt’s trademark grit and determination, which carried her to seven national rowing titles through her 20s, were on show as she learned to walk again and fought her way back to a level she felt comfortable where she is ready to compete again.
Nesbitt, 32, has formed a team with some athletically-minded friends to take part in the multi-sport event for the first time. She has put her hand up for the run leg.
“I’m feeling pretty good in the scheme of things,” Nesbitt said on Thursday.
“Obviously, I’m not at the level I was pre-accident. But you’ve got to get on and make the most of what you can do.”
Nesbitt has returned to training – running, riding her bike on a trainer, pilates, gym and swimming – and is in good shape.
She is, however, not setting expectations any higher than just a good day out.
“It’s great to be just part of the event and support this sort of thing. I love this sort of thing, and it’s a fun way to get a group of friends who are interested in similar sorts of things together and participate, like, towards a common goal.”
Before her accident, Nesbitt’s multi-sport abilities were elite and she is a three-time solo winner of the Freycinet Challenge in 2017, 2018 and 2021.
The Winter Challenge will be held in Orford on August 17-18. More information can be found at www.winterchallengestas.com.
