The global Hilton hotel brand’s first venture into Tasmania is now open.
The new $65m DoubleTree by Hilton Hobart at 179 Macquarie St has 206 rooms, including 80 in the deluxe category, and is situated on the site of the former Myer homewares store.
Hilton Area Vice President and Head of Australasia Paul Hutton said the hotel would bring a “uniquely Tasmanian flavour to the longstanding international hotel brand”.
“DoubleTree by Hilton Hobart brings together a genuine connection to this beautiful part of the world with Hilton’s internationally renowned service and facilities.”
Tourism Industry Council of Tasmania chair Daniel Leesong said the new hotel would unlock a big database of customers that exclusively travel to Hilton hotels.
“It opens a whole new market for Hobart,” he said.
“Hilton is a quality brand, it’s a loved brand and having that part of the mix in the Hobart and in Tasmania is really important.
“Any global brand that comes in and sets up shop is going to have a positive impact on the overall tourism economy,” Mr Leesong said.
DoubleTree by Hilton Hobart opening general manager Steven Millhouse said the facilities, service, atmosphere and personal touches, such as a warm cookie on arrival, make Hilton hotels unique.
He said the DoubleTree by Hilton Hobart was at a great location with easy access to the airport, the CBD and into the regions.
Mr Millhouse said the hotel would have 60 employees in total, with most of those positions already filled and working ahead of the official opening on Wednesday.
DoubleTree by Hilton Hobart is a medium sized hotel with 206 rooms all up (125 king, 80 twin) many of them with views of the River Derwent or kunanyi/Mt Wellington.
The hotel also boasts the Leatherwood restaurant, a function centre, a heated swimming pool and a sauna.
Mr Millhouse said there were a number of interconnecting rooms for families and groups to be able to house up to eight people together.
Hobart Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds said the hotel opening was a “vote of confidence” in the city and tourism sector.
DoubleTree by Hilton is one of the brand’s fastest-growing portfolios with more than 680 hotels across 57 countries and territories. DoubleTree caters to both leisure and business clients.
Tasmanian Premier Jeremy Rockliff said the development was an exciting milestone for Tasmania.
“We know Tasmania has what the world wants, and it is a testament to our exceptional
destination offering that a brand as reputable as Hilton has launched here in Hobart,” Mr Rockliff said.
