Chiya Guff Run Club gearing up for 200km between Hobart to Launceston

Chiya Guff Run Club is using the accessible sport to encourage diversity and inclusion for multicultural communities in Tasmania. They’re going the extra mile to ‘do something big’.

On the eve of a marathon — Anish Adhikari feels like his running club is responsible for “something big in Tasmania”.

Chiya Guff Run Club, that usually hosts weekly runs drawing up to seven different nationalities, will be going further than they have before — trotting 200km between Hobart and Launceston.

Mr Adhikari, who moved to Hobart after arriving to Australia from Nepal, is one of five who will be doing a minimum of a marathon distance. Seven others will do a variety of distances in support.

He said the club, that was only founded in mid-December, was slowly part of a bigger multicultural movement to bring together different ethnicities.

The accessibility and popularity among locals was a key reason behind using running as a driver for promoting diversity and inclusion across different nationalities, he said.

“After six months, we have the confidence of knowing who we are … we’re confident that we can be the change ourselves and everything is falling into place now,” Mr Adhikari said.

The idea for the city-to-city dash rose during a celebration dinner after Run the Bridge.

“Suddenly someone said ‘why don’t we do something big’,” he said.

The idea snowballed from there.

Mr Adhikari said the name “Road Between Us” stuck with a deeper meaning of bridging the gap between the multicultural community and locals.

The support for the race has resulted in the club starting a GoFundMe, with money raised going towards the costs of undertaking the run, he said.

The group will be leaving Hobart’s Regatta Grounds at 4am on Sunday and are planning to finish at Cataract Gorge at 4pm the next day via a night stay at Ross.
