Two people are fighting for life after a fire erupted inside their Modbury home

A man and woman in their 80s are still in a critical condition after a fire ripped through their Modbury home on Monday night, while they were cooking.

An elderly couple remain in intensive care for the second day after a fire ravaged through their Modbury home.

Home occupants, Andrew 82, and Christine, 80, were rescued from their burning home on Clyde St following reports of a structure fire, just after 8pm.

MFS crews and paramedics worked to save the couple with police officers assisting in giving CPR.

They remain in a critical condition at the Royal Adelaide Hospital.

It is understood the couple had been cooking dinner when the blaze started and had lived in the home for more than 50 years, 7News reported.

“We’re pretty shocked as you can imagine and really just want to be able to do what we need to do to look after the house,” daughter-in-law Sandrine Poissonnier told 7NEWS.

“And to look after them, and to make sure their belongings are secure and in place for them, for whatever happens to them next.”

Neighbour Kathleen Sherlock quickly rushed to help the couple before emergency services arrived, after she heard screams coming from next door.

“I picked up some tiles and threw them through the front door and through the front window,” Ms Sherlock said tearfully.

“The smoke couldn’t let us inside the house, it was just too thick and too choking,” neighbour Lachlan Thompson said.

It is believed their pet cat perished in the blaze.

A spokeswoman from the Metropolitan Fire Service said the fire had been extinguished after three crews and a command vehicle attended the scene.

She said an ambulance had taken two people to hospital.

Fire investigators and detectives attended the scene and the fire is non-suspicious.
