A new $2.9m public square in Adelaide’s west will become the “heart” of the West Beach Parks precinct, providing a place for community events.
The Square, developed along the coastline, will also provide recreational and play areas after obtaining $1.45m in state government funding.
Designed by Studio Nine Architects, the community space will include a kiosk, playground, shelter, and other amenities.
As work started on The Square on Tuesday, West Beach Trust chair Jane Jeffreys said it would help connect the local and broader community with the precinct.
“The Square at West Beach Parks is a beachside community open space encouraging connection to nature, to play and to community for the enjoyment and wellbeing of everyone,” she said.
“It will be the heart of the West Beach Parks precinct and is aligned to our master plan, linking visitors to the area’s unrivalled diversity of natural, recreational, community and sporting activities.”
The development comes after the West Beach Surf Life Saving club officially opened its $9m rebuild in May, boasting a number of upgraded facilities.
The rebuild, which was completed in December last year by Partek Construction & Interiors, received $2.5m from the state government, $2.05m in federal funds and council and community support.
Planning Minister Nick Champion said The Square project would re-establish the West Beach site with natural vegetation and revitalise the area.
“The state government is partnering with West Beach Parks to deliver a new public space that will create a more liveable, sustainable and healthy community,” he said.
“It’s great that work is beginning to revitalise this important public space.
“This is a key commitment to encourage more people to get outdoors and be active in the community.”
Construction will begin this month, with completion expected later this year.
