There has been a shake up in the baby name popularity list for girls this year, with the name Charlotte finally beating out Isla for the first time in three years.

On the flip side, for boys, Oliver, once again, has reigned supreme for the 12th year in a row as the most popular name.

Surprisingly Isla didn’t just drop down to second position, but third this year after it was only given to 82 babies.

The ranking was beaten also by the name Olivia, given to 85 babies.

Meanwhile Leo dropped from second spot in 2023 to sixth in 2024 with Henry and Noah moving up to claim second and third respectively.

Charlie took out the fourth most popular name for boys this year, up from eighth in 2023.

“Traditional names continue to be popular in 2024 and this year, we’ve seen Charlotte — long a favourite of royalty — claim the top spot for South Australian baby girls,” Consumer and Business Affairs Minister Andrea Michaels said.

“Pop culture often has an impact on trending names and I wonder if the popularity of ‘Wonka’ last year inspired more parents to name their son Charlie this year.”
