A popular cafe has closed abruptly, gone into liquidation and is now for sale, affecting 18 staff and shocking its customers.

A popular cafe in Mount Gambier has brought a wave of sadness to the community after a sign appeared on its doors announcing it was closed for good.

On Wednesday afternoon, social media posts started circulating that showed images of a sign posted on the doors of Sorrentos Cafe, located on Bay Road in the old post office, reading “business closed”.

The sign continues to say that the business “formerly trading as Sorrentos Cafe” is in liquidation, with Daniel Lopresti of the Adelaide-based Clifton Hall appointed liquidator as of October 15.

“Unfortunately, due to the company’s financial position, the liquidator is unable to continue trading and the company’s operations have ceased,” a spokesman said.

“The company employed approximately 18 casual and permanent staff who have been informed of the closure of the business.

“The liquidator is actively liaising with all affected employees and will continue to provide assistance to employees throughout the liquidation process.”

Mr Lopresti said it was disappointing to see a well-known hospitality venue in Mount Gambier close but was hopeful a buyer for the company’s business assets could be found to establish a new venue at the site or to reinvigorate the existing business.

He is seeking expressions of interest from anyone wishing to buy the cafe’s business assets.

Many Mount Gambier locals have expressed sadness and confusion regarding the closure, some saying the business was advertising for staff “not too long ago”.

“Another small business closing down. Very sad,” one local wrote on the Limestone Coast Community News’ Facebook post.

“Have only been there a couple of times. But thoroughly enjoyed the food each time and the service was great,” said another.
