Popular grandmother Marjorie Morritt killed on her birthday on her way to volunteer at Lyell McEwin Hospital

The family of a woman killed in a northern suburbs crash on her birthday are devastated they didn’t get a chance to speak to her before she died.

A driver has been charged after a popular great-grandmother died on her way to volunteer at a hospital on her birthday.

Lyell McEwin Hospital volunteer, 79-year old Marjorie Morritt, was killed when she was hit by a car in the northern suburbs while her colleagues were waiting for her with a birthday cake.

Her son Peter Morritt and grandson, Benjamin, are devastated that they didn’t get a chance to call on birthday before she died.

“Grandma babysat (me) a lot as a kid, so it is hitting quite hard,” Benjamin told 7NEWS.

“She was so selfless in nature. She had a heart of gold.”

“The enormity of her value that she has in the community is overwhelming,” Peter said.

Family of the beloved great-grandma took to social media to pay tribute to the woman who is being remembered for her dedication to her volunteering and helping others.

Benjamin described her as “the best grandma” and said she would not be forgotten while fellow grandchild Kym Cullen also shared her grief.

“Love you grandma, forever in our hearts,” she posted.

Mrs Morritt left her Elizabeth East home about 8.20am on Tuesday before she was struck by a car.

Emergency services rushed to the intersection of Midway and Kinkaid roads at Elizabeth East after reports a Mitsubishi sedan had struck a pedestrian.

The driver, a 22-year-old Hillbank woman, will face court after she was reported for causing death by careless driving and issued with an immediate loss of licence.

Ms Morritt sustained serious injuries and was taken to the same hospital where she volunteers, but sadly died a short time later.

Her death was met with an outpouring of grief with hundreds of online comments.

“(She) was just lovely, volunteered for a long time in our mental health unit, spending time engaging with the patients and helping run activities. She was so generous with her time and wisdom. Her presence in this world will be missed,” a Facebook user posted.

“By god she was absolutely lovely … she was so giving and caring and I used to love the conversations we would have. It was simply a pleasure knowing her … happy birthday, RIP,” another said.

Many shared stories of her famous “naughty jokes” which never failed to make people laugh.

Ms Morritt is the 45th life lost on South Australian roads this year.

The driver of the car was not injured and was taken to hospital for mandatory drug and alcohol testing.

Ms Morritt was previously awarded a Premier’s certificate by Premier Peter Malinauskas for her outstanding volunteer service to the community.
