A beloved great-grandmother and hospital volunteer was suddenly killed on her 79th birthday - while her colleagues were unknowingly waiting for her with a birthday cake.

Long-serving Lyell McEwin Hospital volunteer Marjorie Morritt had left her Elizabeth East home about 8.20am on Tuesday, when she was tragically struck by a car.

Emergency services had rushed to the intersection of Midway and Kinkaid road, at Elizabeth East after reports a Mitsubishi sedan had struck a pedestrian.

Ms Morritt sustained serious injuries and was taken to the same hospital where she volunteers, but sadly died a short time later.

“She was one of those people that didn’t stay at home in front of the TV set,” Neighbour George Hogg told 7News.

“She’d go and talk to somebody and have a chat, she also did work for a church group.”

Ms Morritt is the 45th Live Lost on South Australian roads this year.

The driver of the car, a 22-year-old local woman, was not injured and was taken to hospital for mandatory drug and alcohol testing.

Ms Morritt was previously awarded a Premier’s certificate by Premier Peter Malinauskas for her ‘outstanding volunteer service’ to the community.

Her colleagues remembered her as a “valued member of their team” who sacrificed her time to assist patients for the last 25 years.
