Marion Golf Park to be renamed as clubhouse makeover starts

Work has started on a major revamp of a golf club in Adelaide’s south, with a new clubhouse and new name unveiled.

A golf course in the southern suburbs will begin its anticipated upgrade nearly 20 years after the original clubrooms were knocked down.

A multimillion-dollar makeover has officially started on the nine-hole Marion Golf Park, including a new 100-seat clubhouse and name change to the Seacliff Golf Course.

Turning the sod on Saturday, Marion Mayor Kris Hanna said the redevelopment was long overdue for the community.

“For nearly 20 years our local golfers have had to make do with a one-room ‘temporary’ clubhouse,” Mr Hanna said. “It’s time we gave them a brand new clubhouse for both members and visitors to enjoy.

“Importantly, it’s not an elitist club – it’s a true community club, allowing people from all walks of life and varying degrees of golfing ability to enjoy the game.”

The designs were put before Marion Council in 2022, when it committed $2.7m towards the facility, and were released for public comment late last year.

Club president Simon Young said the upgrade would “really put us on the map”.

“The club is really excited about this project kicking off and what it will do for our members, but more importantly the wider community,” Mr Young said.

The upgrade includes construction of a new clubroom and pro-shop building, along with landscaping improvements and a new car park that council anticipates will host up to 25,000 rounds of golf per year upon completion.

The redeveloped clubroom will link the first and ninth tees together alongside the practice green, driving range and carpark.

A council spokesperson said the new name was chosen because it would “better align with the area” after a decision was made following discussions with the Marion Golf Park and its course operator.

“The club’s input into choosing the name ‘Seacliff Golf Course’ ensures a sense of ownership and buy-in, which is crucial for garnering support and loyalty from the local community,” the spokesperson said.

“The name holds significant marketing benefits that capitalise on its picturesque and physically appealing location.

“Aligning the course’s name with its natural surroundings creates a strong brand identity that will resonate with potential players and set it apart from other golf courses in the region.

“The new name will act as a powerful marketing tool, inviting golfers and tourists alike to indulge in the allure of Seacliff Golf Course to discover the beauty of its coastal setting.”

Construction is expected to be completed in June 2025.
