Malcolm Hammond awarded prestigious bravery award after ‘selfless act’ saved two police officers at Crystal Brook

A man’s “selfless act” has saved the lives of two SA police officers when they were brutally attacked by a knife-wielding lunatic.

A Crystal Brook man has been awarded one of SA’s most prestigious bravery titles after his “selfless act” saved the lives of two police officers during a frenzied stabbing attack – and immediately shared the credit with his wife.

Malcolm Hammond was named the Lions Club and SAPOL’s Citizen of the Year for 2023 for his lifesaving assistance to two injured police officers.

On May 3, Brevet Sergeant Ian Todd, 53, and Constable Jordan Allely, 32, were attacked and stabbed in the line of duty when they went to speak to local man Sean Ferris about complaints over his dog.

Ferris burst out the door and attacked Brevet Sgt Todd, who suffered critical, life-threatening injuries – later recovering – and then turned to stab Constable Allely, injuring his arm and leg.

Mr Hammond was returning from his lunch break when he noticed two police cars in his street.

Shortly after, his wife called him to say she’d heard “two loud bangs” in their Crystal Brook street.

He returned to find the distressing scene and administered crucial first aid without any hesitation.

Upon receiving the award, Mr Hammond was quick to share the credit with his wife Kerri.

“My wife Kerri also helped by getting blankets and water. She also deserves recognition,” he said. “I am humbled and didn’t expect this at all.

“I’m just happy that the officers injured are okay, and the response from the medical staff on the scene was paramount.”

Commissioner Grant Stevens presented Mr Hammond with the award at Police Headquarters on Thursday, expressing his “immense gratitude”.

“Malcolm’s selfless and courageous actions ensured that Brevet Sergeant Todd and Constable Allely received immediate, lifesaving first aid and compassionate support during this extremely distressing incident,” Mr Stevens said.

“On behalf of South Australia Police, I’d like to express immense gratitude for his assistance. Malcolm’s only concerns were for the welfare of our officers and his actions are a true indication of his heroic character.”

Lions Club of the City of Adelaide President Raymond Najar said Mr Hammond was a deserving recipient.

“The City of Adelaide Lions Club is honoured to partner with SAPOL these past 38 years, who identify a member of the public that places themselves in harm’s way or voluntarily contributes to enhance the service provided by an officer in their line of duty,” he said.

“The recognition of a private individual, who demonstrates initiative to support and assist any SAPOL officer in their line of duty, deserves to be acknowledged for their selfless act.”

Nominations for the 2024 Lions Club of the City of Adelaide and South Australia Police Citizen of the Year award will open in July this year.
