Brevet Sergeant Ian Todd and Brevet Sergeant Jordan Allely stabbed in Crystal Brook attack

The two police officers stabbed in an attack that resulted in the offender being shot and killed have been named as one fights for his life after being stabbed in the neck.

Two SA police officers injured in stabbing

Police Commissioner Grant Stevens has named the two officers injured in an incident at Crystal Brook that left a man dead.

Comm Stevens said 53-year-old Brevet Sergeant Ian Todd, the officer in charge of Port Germein, sustained life-threatening critical injuries after being stabbed in the neck, arm and hands.

Brevet Sergeant Jordan Allely, 32, officer in charge of Crystal Brook, suffered stab wounds to his right leg and arm.

It is understood the officers were attending the Crystal Brook house over an ongoing domestic complaint about the occupant’s dog, a husky, when they were attacked in a horror incident on Wednesday morning.

Both officers were flown to the Royal Adelaide Hospital - Sgt Todd remains in a critical condition while Sgt Allely is in a serious but stable condition.

Comm Stevens said the officers’ injuries would be felt “deeply within the police family”, as both men have loved ones within the service.

“Ian has a son-in-law who is the officer in charge of Kadina police station, while Jordan’s partner is a constable and also the officer in charge of Hallett police. There are family members who are directly involved in terms of the impact of this particular incident,” Comm Stevens said.

In 2018, Sgt Allely and his father Dennis became the only father-and-son to complete their police recruit training at the same time. While Dennis graduated in late 2018, Jordan graduated in January 2019 and was assigned to the Berri police station.

While Jordan was 28 when he graduated, he had applied to join the New Zealand police when he was aged 19.

Sgt Allely told the Police Journal he was told at the interview stage he would get through, it was suggested he “do a bit of travelling and maybe just do some things that I wanted to do before settling into a career.‘’

He headed to the US before returning to NZ, working as a valet for a hotel and later a health insurance company. He then moved to Australia and joined his parents in Adelaide.

“”I didn't know he (dad) was applying before I moved over,’’ Sgt Allely said at the time.

“So, when he said to me that he was applying and suggested I do it as well, there wasn't any hesitancy on my part ... it was a pretty easy decision.

“It's probably one of the biggest bonding things that we’ve done.’’

A local bookshop owner was shocked to hear Sgt Todd was one of the police officers injured, saying the 53-year-old would come into her shop regularly.

“I never knew his name but he was always very polite,” she said. “He would drop in to buy books on his way home, that’s a big shock.”

Good Samaritan, ambulance officers praised

The police commissioner also revealed that a good Samaritan, a neighbour on Symons St, had provided aid to one of the injured officers during the incident.

“We’re very grateful for that person stepping forward and providing critical support,” Comm Stevens said.

Comm Stevens said the incident was “very traumatic” for the officers involved, including first responders, and ambulance officers who attended the scene.

“In all likelihood (ambulance officers’) swift actions very likely saved the life of at least one police officer,” he said.

WATCH POLICE COMMISSIONER’S MEDIA BRIEFING:

“The officers who were first on scene are doing an excellent job and they are maintaining perspective … the family members of the injured officers are being conveyed to Adelaide so they can support Ian and Jordan.

“The sad reality is that police officers are injured quite frequently while on duty and we’re very hopeful that both of these police officers come through the injuries they have received.”

Comm Stevens said he “would not elaborate on the specifics” of Tuesday’s “relatively benign” incident that led to the fatal call-out but a coronial inquiry would be undertaken into the Crystal Brook man’s death.

“It’s far too early to speculate on … what transpired that led to the officers being injured and being forced to use lethal force,” he said.

“I will say, there was a minor disturbance at the local supermarket in Crystal Brook and officers were following up as a result of that incident … the (coronial) investigation will provide further detail as to exactly what transpired yesterday and also today.”

Comm Stevens said the officers were still working to identify the man killed in Wednesday’s incident.

“It’s too early to speculate on the specifics around the person who is deceased at the scene … I would not elaborate on the antecedence of that person until we have a positive identification,” he said.

Both officers were wearing body-worn cameras and stab-resistant vests at the time of the attack, Comm Stevens said.

The police commissioner said the two injured officers were “highly regarded” and their injuries had sent shockwaves through their local communities.

“They’re good people, they’re well respected – and the way they do their job is also respected,” Comm Stevens said.

“This will be felt quite harshly by these local communities. This is not an indication of what we usually see in these local regional communities, but we really don’t know what’s happening underneath the surface in some of these situations.”
