A Goodwood Rd restaurant will be shut indefinitely after a mishap in the kitchen “destroyed” the venue’s dining room.
Owner Wilson Shawyer confirmed the eatery was forced to close on Tuesday following an issue with their oven that caused extensive damage to the eatery’s interior.
Mr Shawyer said there were “broken hearts” as they investigate how and what went wrong, but he vowed to re-open.
“We are still working out what went wrong but due to heat and water damage, our dining room has all but been destroyed,” he said in a post on Instagram.
“The art, the wine, the upholstery, every electrical item has been cooked, flooded or warped.
“We are working through what and when our reopening looks like but we WILL reopen. I f**king hate Tuesday.”
A post on Good Gilbert’s Instagram account had a lighter tone and said the venue’s oven had given the kitchen and dining room an “unplanned sauna session”.
“We’ll be closed for the time being while we sort things out and get everything back to normal,” the post continued.
“If you have a booking with us, we’ll be in touch directly. Appreciate your patience.”
The Good Gilbert team released a statement to The Advertiser confirming an issue with one of their ovens caused “unexpected steam to build up”.
“One of those unfortunate behind-the-scenes hiccups that happen from time to time in hospitality,” the statement said.
“We’ve already taken steps to address it and are working closely with our insurance provider to get everything back on track as quickly as possible.
“It’s definitely under control, and thankfully no one was hurt – just a bit of unexpected hiccup in our week and a temporary pause in service.”
It comes about a month after city restaurant Fugazzi Bar and Dining Room was forced to close for 24 hours after a fire ripped through the building on the Saturday night of AFL’s Gather Round.
The fire started in the kitchen with flames spreading to the roof by the time firefighters arrived.
The damage was estimated at $200,000 with significant water damage caused by the building’s sprinkler system.
Staff worked round the clock to dry carpets and a temporary ceiling was installed, allowing the popular eatery to open its doors the following night.
