Driver charged, young woman in hospital following crash at Christies Beach

A southern suburbs man has booked a day in court while a young woman recovers in hospital following a serious crash at Christies Beach.

A southern suburbs driver has been arrested in connection with a serious crash at Christies Beach while his passenger recovers from serious injuries in hospital.

Emergency services were called to Gilbert Rd just before 1am on March 8.

On arrival, authorities discovered a silver Holden sedan had crashed into a Stobie pole, also mounting a nearby kerb.

The passenger, a 25-year-old local woman, sustained life-threatening injuries and was taken to Royal Adelaide Hospital. She is now in a stable condition.

The 25-year-old was allegedly not wearing a seatbelt and may have been flung from the car upon impact.

Local resident Michael Smith said the street was prone to serious crashes because of reckless driving.

“For a short street, people think it’s a race way. We’ve woken up in the morning to find tyre marks on the grass because people have cut across the gutter,” Mr Smith said.

Other nearby witness said the 25-year-old was initially conscious after the accident, and was treated by paramedics for more than an hour.

The driver of the vehicle, a 24-year-old Seaford Heights man, was uninjured.

On March 12, Major Crash Officers charged him with dangerous driving causing serious harm and driving without due care.

He has been bailed to appear in the Christies Beach Magistrates Court in April.

SA Power Networks attended the scene and stabilised the pole.
