A faux fashion parking ticket fine nearly made an Adelaide driver “lose their s**t*, before discovering it was issued by an emerging South Australian clothing company.
The controversial marketing tactic was led by Mateo, 19, and Noa, 23, who founded Australian streetwear clothing brand New Realm Clo about a year ago.
The Adelaide brothers came across the “wild concept” online that involved duplicating a parking ticket fine and replace it with information about their business for their latest clothing release.
“(We) thought, ‘Hey, why not?’ It’s not every day you get a parking ticket that makes you laugh,” the duo told The Advertiser.
“We loved the idea of flipping a moment of annoyance into a fun surprise that introduces our brand in an unforgettable way.”
The ‘notice of parking violation’ tickets were then placed on car windscreens to mimic fines issued by “the City of Adelaide”.
“They look real enough at first glance, but a closer look shows they’re all about fun – there’s a QR code that takes you straight to our site,” they said.
“We designed them to give people a little jolt of surprise, then a smile.”
The tickets were given to unsuspecting motorists for “violation of the Fashion Code under Section 2025 of the Trendsetter Regulations” for “lacking in style – Section 2025”.
“You’ve been cited! But don’t worry, it’s not as bad as it seems,” the ticket reads.
“This is a gentle nudge to step up your style game.
“Rethink your wardrobe and consider spicing it up with some pieces from New Realm”.
The ticket also prompts the person who received the infringement to scan a QR code that redirects to the brand’s website, so they could “refresh (their) look”, “solve their style deficiencies” and “uncover exclusive deals”.
The duo said they’re received “lots of laughs and thumbs-ups for creativity”, however one Adelaide local took to Reddit to share their dismay after the ticket was “stuck on (their) windscreen” on Friday, March 7.
“Was already having the worst day and saw this stuck under my wiper while driving, nearly lost my sh*t,” the user wrote on the Reddit post, along with a picture of the fake fine.
Mateo and Noa said they understood that some people “didn’t find it as funny” but the feedback has pushed them to “think bigger and do better”.
“We understand it’s a surprise that can startle, and it’s not everyone’s cup of tea,” they said.
“We never want to upset anyone — instead, we hope to bring a bit of unexpected joy. If we’ve ruffled feathers, we hope those can see the lighter side eventually.”
