An Adelaide Hills bakery is officially the home of Australia’s best sausage roll for the second-year-running – and according to the owner, there is a secret to the success.

Banana Boogie Bakery in Belair beat out more than 250 other pastries in the Baking Association of Australia’s state awards night on Sunday.

It rounds off a winning streak for the beloved nine-year-old eatery, which at different times over the years has been recognised for its vanilla slices, meat pies and hot cross buns.

Owner and head baker Jason Spencer said “there was a bit of a secret” to capturing the right flavour but “couldn’t give it away”.

“People are usually quite surprised when they hear it as well, it’s not what you might expect,” he said.

However, “high-quality meat” with “the right fat content” was key to getting it right, giving credit to his supplier Blackwood Butchers.

The 44-year-old begins work at 1am every day and usually finishes in the early afternoon, but said the award was acknowledgment he and his wife Kelly were “getting it right”.

“It’s hard work but I love what I do,” he said.

“You enjoy seeing customers eating your food, and we’ve gotten so much feedback from judges and customers over the years to get to where we are.”

Banana Boogie Bakery also came first in several other pastry classes, among them the state’s best vanilla slice, while CJ’s Bakery at Christies Beach took out a record 11 first podiums.

Pik A Pie Bakery at Meadows was named home of the state’s best kitchener bun. The full list of winners can be viewed on the Baking Association of Australia’s website.
