Accused drug smugglers plead not guilty to importing 25kg of opioids in groceries, shoes

Two of the three accused have pleaded not guilty after Border Force officers uncovered a sophisticated smuggling operation. See the photos.

Two foreign nationals and a dual citizen living in South Australia will defend charges of having imported 25.7kg of opioids into the country, some hidden inside the soles of shoes.

The Australian Border Force intercepted six drug shipments in 2023, which were disguised in packages of Indian spices and groceries.

A brown powder hidden inside was identified as morphine, thebaine and codeine, while a further 282g was contained inside imported clothing and shoes.

In November 2023, officers raided several properties in Adelaide’s western suburbs, arresting two men on skilled worker visas, with further inquiries leading to a third arrest.

The trio appeared in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Thursday.

Two pleaded not guilty and will appear before the Adelaide District Court on Friday, February 14, while the third’s case has been adjourned for Thursday, January 23, at the Adelaide Magistrates Court.
