The origins of skeletal remains found near Katherine have been revealed

Police and heritage officers have uncovered the origins of a set of skeletal remains found near a Territory town.

A skull has been found near Katherine.

The origins of skeletal remains, including a human skull, found near a Northern Territory town have been revealed.

On Tuesday afternoon a member of the public stumbled upon the scene about 15km north of Katherine and reported the discovery to police.

Katherine police have since been working closely with heritage officers and Aboriginal Areas Protection Authority to uncover the origins of the bones.

Acting Commander Kristen Engels revealed the bones would have come from a historic traditional burial.

“Investigations indicate these remains derive from a historic traditional burial, and as such our role can be concluded,” Commander Engels said.

“Police would like to thank all of the government agencies and organisations that assisted.”

It comes just days after skeletal remains, including a skull, were discovered near a popular Top End beach.

On Wednesday, September 28, a bushwalker found bones near Lee Point Beach carpark.

Forensic investigations are expected to take several weeks or months.
