There was no indications of trauma on human bones discovered by a tourist near a popular Top End beach.
Around lunchtime on Wednesday, September 30, a bushwalker and his dog stumbled on parts of a skeleton near the carpark for Lee Point Beach.
Soon after he notified police and a crime scene was quickly established with specialists, medical experts and forensic pathologists called in.
Between Wednesday and Friday, a large number of bones, including a skull, were recovered from the site.
Acting Superintendent Karl Day said police had worked painstakingly to uncover all the bones, but stated it could take months for the person’s identity to be known.
However, he indicated police had not found any signs of trauma on any of the larger bones.
“There’s no indication of any trauma to the skull and there’s no indication of any trauma to any of the larger bones on our first look,” Superintendent Day said.
“Police in conjunction, with medical professionals and the forensic team, have been working since Wednesday to fully process the scene in a painstaking manner.
“They’ve now retrieved numerous human bones from that site, and they will be subject to ongoing forensic testing and analysis in order to time-stamp it and hopefully work towards identification.
“At this early stage it is probably impossible to give an accurate estimation of time line.”
Police also confirmed the man who found the bones was not a suspect in the case due to being a tourist.
The bones were found in an area heavily surrounded by shrubbery, in which police deemed far enough out the way to not caution the public prior to Friday.
“There’s certainly a lot of leaf litter and shrubbery and things like that,” Superintendent Day said.
“It might be a reasonably popular spot, but the scene was far enough out the way that people might not have seen it.
“If we had released the exact location it might have created too much public interest and perhaps contaminating the surrounding area.”
