A SYDNEY singer has stunned his partner by proposing to her in front of thousands of fans at the Singapore Formula One Grand Prix on the weekend.
Aussie group Boys in the Band had almost finished their set just before the race when Simon McLachlan surprised ‘partner in crime’ Sarah Martin who was sitting in the front row.
“In an event that’s broadcast all over the world, it’s probably a really good time in my life to ask this woman down the front if she would like to make me the happiest man in the world,” he said as the crowd cheered.
Luckily, with tears streaming down her face, she said yes.
But there’s a bit of a catch to this romantic interruption - the happy couple are already married.
With a busy schedule forcing the pair into a ‘quickie’ wedding in Los Angeles earlier this year, Simon never had the chance to propose to Sarah the way he really wanted.
The loved up couple met when the band were performing in South Africa two years ago and she was invited to the gig by a mutual friend.
Not wanting to completely discard tradition, Simon had been planning for some time to give Sarah the proposal she never got.
He didn’t tell any of the other band members of his plan - one even looks int other camera and says he had no idea - but made sure he had everything in place for when the time was right.
“It just seemed like the perfect fit,” Simon told The Daily Telegraph.
“We were ending the show, we were coming up to the two year anniversary of when we met and I thought let’s do it the traditional way.”
With the sound of race cars rocketing past in the background and just minutes before the race began, Simon made up his mind.
“Something felt right,” he said. “It was the perfect moment, I had the ring in my breast pocket and we had one song to go.”
Simon and Sarah arrived back to their Bronte home this morning after performing at the Grand Prix opposite such international acts as Maroon 5, Pharrell Williams and Bon Jovi.
