SICK people are being urged to head to their GP to get treated before getting seriously ill in an effort to free up Royal Darwin Hospital beds. It comes after a code yellow for lack of beds was called last week.
In response to the bed shortage surgeries were “prioritised” to emergency and category one patients.

A Health Department spokeswoman said the peak in bed demand required RDH to enact its capacity management plans.
“Patient safety is a priority and the dedicated staff at RDH work hard to ensure Territorians continue to receive the best patient centred care possible in these periods of high demand,” he said.

“We urge people who have non-emergency health needs to see their GP as soon as they become sick to try to avoid becoming acutely unwell. This helps us care for those who most need a hospital bed.”
