Waterfront works bring CBD to life for pedestrians

Southeast Queensland's newest city centre is taking shape and pedestrians are central to the amazing waterfront development's design.

The latest works at the Maroochydore CBD will open up the precinct to the public.

WORK has started on viewing decks, landscaped terraces, footpaths and garden beds along the edge of the new Maroochydore city centre’s central waterway.

SunCentral Maroochydore development manager Simon Kay said the works would enable people to walk along footpaths from Maud Street to Plaza Parade through the city centre.

“Pedestrian accessibility and connectivity is a key feature of the city centre’s design,” Mr Kay said.

“The current works will enable the extension of First Ave and open Sunshine Coast Parade, expanding the network of accessible streets in the city centre’s core commercial precinct.”

Mr Kay said giant concrete piles, each weighing 1.5 tonnes, were laid earlier this year to create the foundations for the public realm alongside the central 500m waterway.

“Green spaces will be dotted alongside the water where city workers, residents and visitors will be able to relax on timber decks and grassy terraces that overlook the water,” he said.

“Almost 800 trees and shrubs will be planted so there’ll be plenty of shade for people who want to spend leisure time and for office works to take a lunch break.”

Mr Kay said of concrete revetment walls had been installed along the waterway as part of the initial edge works as well as a weir to maintain water levels.

“The waterway and footpaths also play an important role in linking the proposed premium hotel and business convention centre in the CBD to the future transit terminus as well as to Sunshine Plaza,” he said.

The first stage of edge works was expected to be finished in October and would form part of the extensive public realm in Maroochydore City Centre.

Foundation Square, a 2800sq m public park in the CBD, was officially named last month at a day of celebrations to mark the opening of the first stage within the Maroochydore City Centre.
